BMI ranges for adults

Indian and other Asian adults tend to carry more body fat at a lower BMI, so health bodies recommend lower cut-offs for them.

How BMI is calculated

Metric BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Example 65 kg and 170 cm → 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.5

Feet, inches and pounds are converted to metres and kilograms before the same formula is applied.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the BMI ranges lower for Indians?

Studies show that Indian and other South Asian adults face a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease at a lower BMI than Western populations. The WHO and India's consensus guidelines therefore treat a BMI of 23 as overweight and 25 as obese for Asian adults.

Is BMI an accurate measure of health?

BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not tell muscle apart from fat, so athletes may show a high BMI while being healthy. Waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar and a doctor's assessment give a fuller picture.

Can I use this calculator for children?

No. For anyone under 18, BMI is compared against growth charts for their age and sex. A paediatrician can check this properly.

What is a healthy waist size?

For Indian adults, a waist size above 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women is linked with higher health risk, even when BMI is in the normal range.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
